Camel Birthday Cake

I took the dive, I bit the bullet, I threw caution to the wind..... I baked a CAKE!!

I have a small "fear" of baking cakes, I don't trust myself and if there are things that could go wrong, they probably will.

So I googled for recipes, turns out Victoria Sponge is what I meant by classic birthday cake, and I found one by Mary Berry, I thought "she does Great British Bake Off, she will probably know a thing or two"

Then to the shops, I have some equipment now due to the cookie, but not cake pans/tins.

As is tradition, here is everything I purchased to make a cake.

I don't know if you have made a cake before (I haven't) it is MUCH easier to mix if you have a machine, like the recipe says, I just have a wooden spoon, that I "won" for losing a competition.

Here is said mixture ready to go in the oven in my cheap and cheerful cake pans/tins.

Now to create suspense...... I forgot to photograph the "sandwiches" (as Mary Berry calls them, and probably all actual bakers) once I took them out the oven, but I did it I swear!

I then made a variety of Icings as I don't like cream so I used butter icing as the "sandwich filling" and piled that on top of one of the cakes.

I flipped the other one over and smothered it in strawberry jam. Then SQUISHED them together. It's starting to look like an actual cake....

SPOILER ALERT!!!! I iced the top of the cake, and using my Artistic Flair, I made a icing piping bag out of a freezer bag and drew a camel, I think you will all agree, the likeness to an actual camel is uncanny! - it does not in any way shape or form look like a dog, cat, moose or deer!

So..... TA DA!! my camel birthday cake! I used a toothpick and blue food dye to write happy birthday and draw the stars!

I have learnt many things following this incredible journey, including cake pans/tins should ideally be straight and not at an angle. It makes it look like you have just dropped one cake on top of another!
